The Food Security Official Cheat Sheet
Food Security is the name of a photographic installation piece that is on displayed in connection with the Hungry for Change: What Toronto Eats exhibition at Hart House. This photo exhibit by Toronto area photographer and anti-poverty activist Cheryl Duggan was created in collaboration with The Stop Community Food Centre.
In addition, to the Hungry for Change exhibition Ms. Duggan created an installation piece titled Food Security. This was created in an effort to recognize International Food Day on October 16, 2009. Thankfully the Hungry for Change exhibit at Hart House also encompasses other international dates of significance including the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, United Nations Day, and World Development Information Day.
It is admittedly a challenge to acknowledge all the issues that people have with food. Food Security is a three piece wall hanging with photos attached. The main subject matter of Food Security is apples. The twelve images contains twelve different types of apples that have been paired with an object that deals with a specific food security issue.
The images on the first panel (the white one) are titled Red Delicious Hormone Replacement Therapy, Cortland's Chemical Cocktail, Dr. MacIntosh, Fuji Genetics, Paula Red's Weight Loss Program, and Migrating Empire.
On the center (grey) panel is a giant chain and lock. This represents the lack of food security, as well as, the many grey areas that seem to encompass the discussion around the food that makes it to our dinner tables.
The images on the third and final panel (the black one) are titled Granny Smith Extinction, Golden Delicious Riches, Ambrosia Elixir of the Gods, Royal Gala Designer, Waxing Honey Crisp, and Abundant Starvation.
The Hungry for Change: What Toronto Eats is a combined effort between Hart House and The Stop Community Food Centre. Food Security is most definitely an integral piece of this exhibition. This exhibit is inspired by and showcased alongside Peter Menzel's exhibition What the World Eats.
The official launch will be held on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 @ 6:00 p.m. with a light reception to follow at 7:00. For those interested in a self directed tour Hart House is open everyday from 7:00 a.m. to midnight. The exhibit is in the main floor hall way of Hart House from October 16th to October 26th.
